Takayama is a beautifully preserved old town deep in the mountainous Hida region. The train ride here from Kanazawa was quite scenic as it started snowing as soon as we entered the mountain and the landscape turned white as we went deeper. Our entire trip was in the winter but this was the first time we actually encountered snow.
We found the town to be smaller and even more atmospheric than Kanazawa, so walking about is a relaxing pleasure. The Hida region is famous for its beef, so do try the beef dishes in restaurants even though they can be quite pricey. You can even find Hida beef-flavoured potato sticks sold here, and they are wonderfully delicious and addictive!
