V and I predicted that Kyoto might be more interesting to us than Tokyo and planned a longer stay there than any other places in Japan we visited on this first trip. We were right, and grateful we did. The previous capital of Japan, Kyoto has plenty of old world charm. The city is dotted with Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, gardens, palaces, and traditional houses. It is every bit as modern in amenities and services, but walking around in the city gives you plenty of glimpses into the old Japanese lifestyle. If you’re lucky, you can even see a geisha in full costume and makeup making her way to an old teahouse in Gion.
