We arrived in Tokyo on Sunday morning, rather tired and shell-shocked as Tokyo in December was colder than we anticipated, but we excitedly dropped our bags and took the JR Yamanote line straight to Harajuku. The entrance to the Meiji shrine was right next to the busy Harajuku station, marked by a massive torii gate so you wouldn’t miss it. As soon as we entered the shrine grounds, we forgot we were in one of the busiest cities in the world. It was like entering a sacred forest, tranquil and beautiful. I was hoping I’d see a kodama (tree spirit), but I guess they were shy.
